When you’re reading with your child, let yourself be caught up in the game, without censoring or judging yourself. It’ll be much more fun for you and your child. Here are a few tips:
1) Use an expressive tone of voice.
2) Imitate the characters in the story by changing the tone and rhythm of your voice, adopting a physical posture, gestures or facial expressions.
3) Have fun making noises and onomatopoeia to illustrate the situation. For example: “vroom”, for a car engine; “boom”, for an object falling to the ground; “Cock-A-Doodle-Doo”, when the rooster crows. Imitating sounds is a fun activity for children. It’s one of the stages in language development, usually preceding the use of words.
4) Illustrate the situation with gestures. For example: flap your wings like a bird flying away, open the door.
