Healthy eating habits are essential, especially for growing children. Their physical state depends on their nutrition. What is less commonly know is that their overall moral, their capacity to concentrate, their memory and their excitability are also influenced by their nutrition. And thus, our daily choices are primordial for our children’s overall health.

Here is a simple fruit based healthy recipe which is fun and very easy to prepare as a family: chocolate glazed frozen bananas! A no bake recipe everyone will enjoy.

You will need the following supplies for this recipe (4 frozen chocolate glazes frozen bananas).

  • 2 bananas (you can always substitute for another fruit if you don’t have bananas at home)
  • 4 popsicle sticks or other wooden or plastic substitute (plastic cutlery even works)
  • 10 ounces of chocolate broken or chopped into chunks
  • Whatever garnish you choose: crushed nuts, grated coconut, cake decorations…whatever you have on hand!

Step 1 :

Start by peeling the bananas and cutting them in half to end up with a total of 4 pieces. Skewer the cut end of each banana with a wooden stick. Place the 4 pieces in the freezer, for about an hour, or until they are frozen solid.

Step 2 :

It’s the perfect time to prepare your garnishes while the bananas are in the freezer!

Place the chopped chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl and melt it in 30-second increments. Stir until the chocolate is melted and smooth. Place your toppings in shallow bowls. When your chocolate is melted and your toppings are ready, remove the bananas from the freezer.

The chocolate will harden fast, so wait until the bananas are almost ready to start melting it.

Step 3 :

Hold one banana over the bowl of chocolate. Use a spoon and spill a generous amount of chocolate over the banana, rotating it. It’s important to work quickly, since the chocolate will start to set quickly. Sprinkle the toppings over the banana. Repeat until all of the bananas are coated with chocolate.

Don’t be afraid of variety when decorating!

The frozen bananas can now be served. If you won’t be eating them right away, store them in an airtight container or zip-top plastic bag in the freezer. If you are serving them straight from the freezer, allow them to sit at room temperature for 10-15 minutes before serving, for the best taste and texture and to avoid a brain freeze!
